My New Year Re-solutions

Hands writing "New Year's Resolutions" on paper with coffee and holiday decor around.

鈥淎n inch of movement will bring you closer to your goals than a mile of intention.鈥 鈥 Steve Maraboli

Did you know that about 80% of New Year鈥檚 resolutions fail by February? Personally, I鈥檝e seen this time and time again. Most resolutions falter because they鈥檙e overly ambitious or too vague. And when we stumble, we often give up entirely, overwhelmed by the enormity of the goal.

But here鈥檚 a game-changing truth: achieving your goals isn鈥檛 about massive overhauls 鈥 it鈥檚 about consistent, small steps. This is the power of the 1% rule: making just a 1% improvement daily. Over time, these small actions compound, like your bank savings account, creating life-altering transformations.

Reflect and Reframe for 2025

As we step into 2025, take a moment to reflect:

  • What are the top 1-2 things I want to change to improve my life?
  • What small, simple habits can help me manifest these changes?

Your answers will be as unique as you are. The key is starting small, picking something enjoyable, and building consistency.

For example, if you want to enhance your mental acuity in 2025, try committing to a 5-minute guided meditation every morning, right after brushing your teeth. Pairing a new habit with an existing one makes it easier to stick with over time.

Or maybe your goal is to feel more energized. Start by drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up. This simple action rehydrates your body and kickstarts your day.

The secret lies in choosing actions that don鈥檛 feel overwhelming but bring a sense of accomplishment. These small wins create momentum, keeping you motivated and moving closer to your bigger goals.

Embrace Re-solutions

This year, don鈥檛 set resolutions鈥攅mbrace what I call re-solutions. Think about the life you want to build and start with just one small habit today. Your future self will thank you.

Four fresh tips to make your re-solutions stick:

  1. Pick a feeling, not just a goal: Instead of saying, 鈥淚 want to lose 10 pounds,鈥 ask yourself, 鈥淗ow do I want to feel?鈥 Perhaps it鈥檚 energized or confident. When you anchor your goals to emotions, you鈥檒l find more meaningful ways to pursue them鈥攁nd you鈥檙e more likely to stay motivated.
  2. Start with identity, not actions: Resolutions that align with who you want to become are more powerful. Want to read more books? Think, 鈥淚鈥檓 a reader,鈥 and act as one. Instead of chasing random milestones, focus on being the identity you want to create.
  3. Build a 鈥渨hen life happens鈥 plan: Life鈥檚 curveballs derail even the best intentions. Plan for inevitable slip-ups by setting a recovery strategy. If you miss a day, don鈥檛 let it derail into a week. Remember, progress is not in a straight line, and jumping back on the tracks quickly is what matters most.
  4. Celebrate micro wins We tend to overlook the power of small victories. Track your progress and celebrate it 鈥 whether it鈥檚 sticking to your habit for a week or feeling calmer after a 5-minute meditation. These moments build confidence, momentum, and reinforce your commitment.
